About Old Timers Mine
Old Timers Mine – Unearth the Magic of Coober Pedy
Step into the rich history of Coober Pedy at Old Timers Mine, a must-visit attraction where adventure and heritage meet underground. Originally hand-dug in 1916, this authentic opal mine offers a captivating self-guided tour through historic tunnels, underground homes, and a museum brimming with local stories. Discover natural seams of opal and fossils, admire opals under UV light, and try your luck in the family-friendly noodling pits.
Multilingual maps make it easy to explore at your own pace. Along the way, visit the underground gift shop and jewellery showroom, featuring dazzling opal pieces and souvenirs. Looking for something special? With over 55 years of opal expertise, the family at Old Timers Mine can help you design a custom, one-of-a-kind piece to treasure forever.
Need a place to stay? The on-site RV Park offers a free, donation-supported camp area for self-contained travellers. Toilets are provided, pets are welcome, and you’ll be just steps away from the mine. No bookings required—first come, first served (72-hour max stay). Please note: no campfires, no grey water dumping, and campers must take their rubbish with them. Whether you’re chasing opals, exploring Aussie history, or just passing through the Outback, Old Timers Mine is a true Coober Pedy treasure.
