Townsville, Australia’s largest topical city is home to Reef HQ which has the largest ‘captive’ living reef in the world. Magnetic Island, just off the coast is easily accessible by Fast Ferry.
Heading further north is where the Great Barrier Reef sits just off the shore of lush, green rainforest. Swaying palms, exotic tropical fruits, swimming and snorkelling are part of the ‘tropical top’ experience. Drive the Great Green Way (between Cardwell and Cairns). Mission Beach has excellent accommodation and you may spot a cassowary or two.
Cairns of course, offers international facilities and world class attractions. From here you can day trip to the Atherton Tablelands, Great Barrier Reef, Port Douglas or the Daintree River. Catch the Savannahlander train from Cairns out west to fascinating pioneer mining towns like Georgetown and Croydon. Karumba has excellent fishing and the Karumba Katch Seafood Festival in October.
Visit the historic township of Cooktown, nestled on the edge of the Endeavour River it has a fascinating history and a fantastic museum. If you are looking for the adventure of a lifetime, north of Cooktown is the wild, untamed country of Cape York. Stay at Punsand Bay Camping Resort, Australia’s most northern beachfront campground that overlooks the Torres Straight.
