About Josephines Gallery & Kangaroo Orphanage

Josephine’s Gallery & Kangaroo Orphanage – A MUST‑SEE in Coober Pedy

Located at 131–133 Hutchison Street, this hidden gem blends a vibrant Aboriginal art gallery with a fulfilling wildlife sanctuary. Since opening in 2008, caretakers Josephine and Terry—along with passionate volunteers—have rescued and nurtured orphaned kangaroos, wombats, birds, and lizards across vast outback South Australia.

Visitors can:

  • Explore compelling local Aboriginal art, try a didgeridoo, and shop unique opal jewellery.

  • Meet orphaned joeys and larger kangaroos—feedings take place daily at 12 pm and 5:30 pm (don’t be late!).

  • Learn about native wildlife and culture through guided discussions.

With heartfelt hospitality, interactive experiences, and a deeply rooted conservation mission, Josephine’s appeals to art lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, families, and solo travelers alike. A small admission fee and donations directly support wildlife rescue efforts.
