Charleville Bilby Experience
QLD - Outback Queensland

About Charleville Bilby Experience
Located at the historic Charleville Railway Station, the Charleville Bilby Experience is a must-visit for wildlife lovers and outback travellers. This one-of-a-kind experience lets you meet the Greater Bilby—a charming, endangered marsupial fighting for survival in Australia’s harsh interior.
Step into the nocturnal house, where day becomes night so you can watch bilbies during their most active hours. After a lively and informative talk from a passionate keeper, you’ll understand the bilbies’ vital role as desert ecosystem engineers and why their protection matters.
Run by the Save the Bilby Fund, the program has already bred over 50 bilbies in Charleville, supporting a bold vision to build an insurance population of 10,000 bilbies by 2030. Bilbies bred here are carefully matched for genetic diversity and released into predator-proof sanctuaries like Currawinya National Park.
State-of-the-art monitoring—using DNA from bilby scats and remote cameras—is helping track wild populations across thousands of square kilometres. These efforts, combined with the National Bilby Genome Project, are giving scientists and conservationists the tools they need to ensure the bilby’s long-term survival.
Before you leave, explore the bilby gift shop—every purchase and donation supports vital conservation work. You can even become a “Mate of the Bilby” and help save this species year-round.
Easily accessible in the centre of town, the Charleville Bilby Experience is both entertaining and educational—ideal for families, tourists, and anyone passionate about Australian wildlife.
Bookings are essential, so secure your spot and become part of the movement to save the bilby in our lifetime.
