About Top Secret World War II Tour
Hidden in the heart of Outback Queensland, the town of Charleville was once home to a top-secret United States Army Air Force base during World War II. Today, you can explore this remarkable piece of military history through the Top Secret WWII Tour—a must-visit for history buffs and curious travellers alike.
Join the Tag-Along Tour, a one-hour guided experience that takes you through six original WWII sites, including rare access to classified military technology used in the Pacific Theatre. Learn how over 3,500 American servicemen lived, trained, and carried out secret operations in this remote outpost—completely hidden from the outside world.
After your tour, head to the WWII Interactive Exhibit, where you can “enlist” and step into the shoes of a WWII airman. Experience ocean voyages, classified missions, and even command a bombing run from inside a B-17 Bomber simulator. This self-guided exhibit brings history to life with stories of wartime romance, sacrifice, and the lasting impact on the Charleville community.
📍 Opening Hours:
October to March – Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm
April to September – Daily, 9am to 5pm
📌 Tag-Along Tour: Monday to Friday, 8am to 9am (Oct–Mar)
Located at the original USAAF site, the WWII Secret Base is also pet-friendly (on-leash) and perfect for group visits. Larger groups can enjoy a guided coach tour, including exclusive access to “The Vault”, plus time to explore the exhibit at their own pace.
